MFL
Called to Change:
At Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School we believe that the learning of a foreign language provides a valuable educational, social and cultural experience for our pupils. It helps them to develop communication skills including key skills of speaking and listening and extends their knowledge of how language works. Learning another language gives children a new perspective on the world, encouraging them to understand their own cultures and those of others. We have chosen for our pupils to learn French. We use the Language Angels scheme of work which uses games and songs to help engage children with language learning.
Intent:
At Sacred Heart RC Primary and Nursery School our aim is that all children in KS2 will assess quality teaching of French and leave Sacred Heart confident and motivated to continue to further develop their skills into the next stage of their education and beyond.
Our intent is to teach a rich, balanced , progressive curriculum using French to foster pupil’s curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world.
Implement:
Teachers will deliver a fun and friendly way of learning a language. This will be done using engaging French lessons to all KS2 pupils using curriculum content and resources on Language Angels, which are relevant to the children.
Planning for all French lessons is done using the 2014 National Curriculum, Language Angels and Cumbria Scheme of Work. This ensures that knowledge, skills and understanding is developed throughout the year (short-term) and the Key Stage (long-term). Planning is sequenced so that new knowledge and skills build on what has been taught before and towards defined end points.
The National Curriculum aims to provide a structure and skill development for the Language curriculum being taught throughout the school supplemented with Language Angels and Cumbria Scheme of Work. Pupils engage in:
- games and songs to maximise enjoyment and make as many connections to real life situations as possible.
- Speech and listening activities
- When appropriate, children will record written work informally in books which are now passed through the years and become a portfolio of their learning.
- Intercultural and experience days such as European day of languages and Bastille day
Impact:
The impact of our MFL curriculum is that our children will achieve in line with National expectations. Work and evidence will demonstrate a broad range of activities including speaking, listening, writing and intercultural understanding.
Children develop their knowledge and skills in reading and writing, speaking and listening and reach national expectations or above by the end KS2.
Children are able to achieve Age Related Expectations. We endeavour to ensure that the Language Curriculum we provide will give children an appropriate balance of spoken and written language and should lay the foundations for further foreign language.
Assessment:
All pupils are assessed formatively through verbal feedback. Teachers regularly check their French folders to assess the pupil’s understanding of the French language. Language Angels Tracking & Progression Tool enables teachers to record, analyse and interpret data for the foreign language teaching you provide.
Teachers can use the comprehensive reporting facility to monitor where each pupil is in their foreign language learning journey and summatively assess pupils progress. The data is then uploaded onto our school assessment system Insight.
