Music

 

Called to Change:

At Sacred Heart we aim to make music an enjoyable learning experience which is also an opportunity for personal expression. Our teaching focuses on developing the children’s ability to understand rhythm and follow a beat; through singing songs the children learn about the structure and organisation of music. We teach them to listen and appreciate different genres of music. Children develop their descriptive language skills when learning about how music can represent different feelings, emotions and narratives. Children are also taught the technical vocabulary associated with music such as volume, pitch, tone, beat and rhythm and we encourage children to use these terms when discussing music. Children will also experience the ability to play a variety of instruments, read musical notation and compose and perform their own musical pieces. 

 

Intent:

To create a musical atmosphere within Sacred Heart school. 

To have a curriculum using the Dimensions scheme of work which shows progression from EYFS-KS2, covers different elements of music including; listening, composing and performance, learn music terminology and vocabulary and develop a good understanding and appreciation of how music has changed throughout history.

To ensure children receive varied musical experiences outside of school to listen to and appreciate different genres of music. 

 

Implement:

To hold a school Christmas production, summer production, school choir club as part of Furness voices and KS2 children to have opportunities for brass and violin lessons to enhance children’s experiences of music.

To continue to check music data and curriculum coverage to best support children’s learning and progression.

Arrange trips throughout the year for out of school experiences for children to listen to and appreciate a variety of musical performances. 

 

Impact:

All children will get plenty of opportunities to learn a musical instrument and give performances to other classes and parents/carers. 

Children will understand the relevance of what they are learning within music and develop an appreciation for musical experiences within school.

Music lessons will inspire future musicians within school as well as let children experience musicians through lessons and assemblies to understand jobs they could have in their own futures.

Assessment:

The Dimensions scheme is a progressive scheme which builds upon prior learning. Assessment is an ongoing process; informal assessments are made as teachers observe children working during practical lessons. At Sacred Heart we aim for children to become more independent of their learning especially in upper Key Stages; self assessment and peer assessment are tools which are utilised for this purpose alongside more formal assessment opportunities. Teachers are able to use the end of units assessments to summatively assess children’s progress in music and upload data onto our school assessment system Insight.
